Description
Positioned on the lateral surface of the auricle, the tragicus appears as a small intrinsic muscle overlying the cartilage of the tragus, immediately anterior to the conchal bowl and inferior to the root of the helix. Its short fibers blend with the perichondrium and adjacent auricular connective tissue, placing the muscle superficial to the tragal cartilage and just anterior to the external acoustic meatus. Anteriorly, the tragus forms the boundary with the preauricular skin, while posteriorly the structure relates to the concha and the entrance to the ear canal. Small anatomy. Tight relationships. Understanding the tragicus matters when teaching the intrinsic muscles of the auricle because they are routinely omitted in head and neck survey figures, yet they explain subtle auricular motion and provide dependable landmarks on the cartilaginous framework. This lateral perspective is also practical for clinicians working in the preauricular region, where local anesthetic infiltration, incision planning, or trauma repair can involve the tragus and its perichondrial attachments, and where perichondritis or auricular hematoma management hinges on respecting the cartilage and overlying soft tissues.
