Description
Shown in a right lateral cutaway of the male auricle, the tragus is opened to reveal the tragicus muscle lying immediately deep to the skin over the tragal eminence, with its short fibers oriented within the anterior wall of the conchal region. Anterior to the cartilaginous tragus, the external acoustic meatus (external auditory canal) courses medially toward the tympanic membrane, rendered in pale blue at the medial end of the canal. Superior and posterior auricular contours, including the helix and concha, frame the field, while adjacent facial and scalp tissues provide context for the superficial plane. Small auricular muscles tend to be ignored until you operate or inject near them. The tragicus sits in the same neighborhood as common procedural corridors for otoplasty, preauricular incisions, and local anesthetic infiltration around the tragus and external auditory canal, so a clear map of the subcutaneous layer helps explain why minor dissection or scar tethering can alter the tragal contour. This view also supports teaching the relationship between the cartilaginous canal, tympanic membrane, and the anterior periauricular soft tissues where postoperative edema and hematoma can track. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy courses when introducing the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the auricle, or in operative textbooks and patient-facing surgical education for tragal-based approaches to the ear canal and tympanic membrane.
