Description
Seen from the lateral aspect of the right ankle and dorsolateral foot, the extensor digitorum brevis (EDB) is exposed beneath the skin and superficial fascia as a muscular belly on the superolateral dorsum of the foot, just anterior to the lateral malleolus (fibular malleolus). Its fibers arise from the dorsal calcaneus and adjacent inferior extensor retinaculum, then pass anteriorly and distally toward the dorsal aspects of the lesser toes, where the muscle’s slips blend with the extensor digitorum longus tendons and dorsal digital expansions. Deep to the EDB lie the tarsal bones, while more proximally the tendon contours across the ankle are framed by the retinacular bands and the lateral malleolus as the key bony landmark. Clear layers. A lateral perspective of EDB matters because this muscle is both a palpable surface landmark and a surgical corridor reference on the dorsolateral foot, where tendons, retinacula, and the lateral malleolus converge in a compact space. Clinically, the region is relevant when teaching the extensor retinaculum and dorsal tendon anatomy after ankle sprain, and during dorsolateral approaches for sinus tarsi and subtalar procedures where muscle splitting or retraction may be required. EDB wasting also appears in chronic peroneal neuropathy or L5 radiculopathy, so correlating the muscle belly with the bony ankle contour helps when documenting atrophy and mapping motor deficits.
