Description
Viewed from the right lateral side, the os coxae is presented without the sacrum, so the ilium, ischium, and pubis can be read as a single composite bone meeting at the acetabulum. Superiorly, the iliac blade rises toward the iliac crest and anterior superior iliac spine, while inferiorly the ischial body continues to the ischial tuberosity and ischial spine along the posterior margin. Anterior and inferior to the acetabulum, the pubic body and superior pubic ramus contribute to the obturator foramen, with the inferior pubic ramus approaching the ischial ramus to complete the ring. Bone landmarks are clear. This lateral perspective centers the acetabulum, the socket for the femoral head, and makes the relationship between the acetabular rim, adjacent ilium, and posterior ischium easy to appreciate. Orthopaedic fixation of acetabular fractures depends on recognizing column anatomy, and this view helps orient the anterior column (pubis and anterior ilium) against the posterior column (ischium and posterior ilium) as described in Judet and Letournel patterns. It also supports teaching of hip dislocation mechanics, where posterior dislocation commonly impacts the posterior wall of the acetabulum. Use it for pelvic and lower limb anatomy teaching in medical and PA gross anatomy courses, for orthopaedic trauma chapters discussing acetabular fracture classification and approaches (Kocher-Langenbeck versus ilioinguinal), and for patient-facing diagrams that need a clean bony landmark reference without the visual clutter of the sacrum.
