Description
Framed from an anterior perspective, the paired os coxae are presented with the ilium superiorly, the pubis anteromedially, and the ischium posteroinferiorly, converging at each acetabulum to form the hip joint socket. Along the midline, the pubic bodies meet at the symphysis pubis inferior to the pelvic brim, while the sacrum sits posteriorly between the iliac bones, its auricular surfaces aligning with the sacroiliac joints. Inferiorly, the obturator foramina open on either side of the pubic arch, and the proximal femora appear laterally as they articulate with the acetabular lunate surfaces. Orientation is clear. Male pelvic morphology is the teaching focus here: a narrower subpubic angle, a more heart-shaped pelvic inlet, and a relatively robust sacrum compared with typical female anatomy. Seeing the greater sciatic notch from the front helps anchor where the sciatic nerve will exit the pelvis via the greater sciatic foramen after it is completed by the sacrospinous and sacrotuberous ligaments, a point that matters when discussing deep gluteal pain syndromes and posterior hip approaches.
