Seen from a lateral perspective, the T2 vertebra sits in the upper thoracic column just inferior to T1 and superior to T3, with the intervertebral discs interposed between adjacent vertebral bodies. The vertebral body lies anterior to the vertebral arch, while the pedicles and laminae form the posterior boundary of the vertebral canal, where the spinal cord would course. Superior and inferior articular facets are emphasized at the posterior elements, oriented to meet the corresponding facets of T1 and T3 and guide motion at the zygapophysial (facet) joints. The thoracic kyphotic curve provides the regional backdrop, with cervical lordosis superiorly and lumbar lordosis inferiorly. Facet orientation in the thoracic spine limits flexion and extension while permitting rotation, and this lateral view makes that constraint easier to teach than a straight posterior view. Upper thoracic pain patterns and stiffness often trace to zygapophysial joint irritation or degenerative facet arthropathy, and T2 is a frequent reference level when correlating exam findings with segmental biomechanics.
