Description
Oriented in lateral profile, the first lumbar vertebra (L1) is presented with its vertebral body anteriorly and the vertebral arch posteriorly, making the short pedicles and their adjacent superior vertebral notch easy to read in profile. The superior and inferior articular processes project posteriorly from the pedicle lamina junction, framing the zygapophysial (facet) joint region just behind the vertebral body. Posterior elements extend into the lamina and spinous process, while the transverse process projects laterally from the pedicle. L1 is the transition point. That pedicle notch relationship matters because it defines the superior portion of the intervertebral foramen at the thoracolumbar junction, where the exiting spinal nerve and segmental vessels pass in tight quarters. In practice, this is the level where burst fractures of the L1 vertebral body (common after axial load falls) can narrow the spinal canal and distort pedicle anatomy, complicating pedicle screw trajectory and making CT-based appreciation of the pedicle and notch profile more than academic. The lateral view also reinforces how the lumbar pedicle is shorter and more robust than in the thoracic region, a useful contrast when teaching regional vertebral morphology. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and osteology labs to anchor vertebral identification by level, and in orthopaedics or neurosurgery teaching files when explaining thoracolumbar fracture patterns, intervertebral foramen boundaries, and posterior instrumentation landmarks.
