Description
Centered in the lumbar segment, the second lumbar vertebra (L2) is highlighted in posterior view, with the spinous process projecting posteriorly from the junction of the laminae and the paired superior and inferior articular processes flanking it on either side. Broad laminae sweep laterally toward the pedicles, while the transverse processes extend laterally from the vertebral arch, their thick roots (bases) apparent where they arise near the pars interarticularis. Superiorly and inferiorly, adjacent lumbar vertebrae provide context for intersegmental alignment, with the midline spinous processes forming a posterior ridge over the vertebral canal. The sacrum sits inferiorly as the terminal element of the vertebral column. Posterior anatomy of L2 matters when you need to teach or plan around the facet joints and the pars, because lumbar stability and many pain generators live in this posterior complex rather than in the vertebral body. Facet arthropathy at L1–L2 and L2–L3 can refer pain to the flank or anterior thigh, and the orientation of the zygapophyseal joints helps explain why lumbar extension and rotation can provoke symptoms.
