Description
Viewed from the lateral aspect of an adult male upper limb, the proximal humerus leads distally to the elbow region where the lateral head of triceps brachii is emphasized along the posterolateral shaft and toward its insertion on the olecranon of the ulna. Radius and ulna run parallel in the forearm, with the radial head positioned lateral to the ulnar trochlear notch at the level of the elbow joint. Distal to the forearm, the carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges align to complete the skeletal chain into the hand. Orientation is clear. Clinically, a lateral perspective like this helps frame posterior elbow mechanics during resisted extension and during approaches that work around the triceps insertion, such as exposure for olecranon fracture fixation or posterior elbow arthrotomy. Relationship matters: the lateral head of triceps forms part of the muscular boundary near the radial nerve’s course in the spiral groove proximally and toward the lateral intermuscular septum, a frequent site of traction or compression neuropathy with humeral shaft fractures. Teaching elbow extension without anchoring the triceps to the ulna and humerus leaves the motion abstract. This fixes it.
