Description
Seen from the lateral aspect of the right upper limb, the triceps brachii dominates the posterior compartment of the arm, with the lateral head forming the most prominent superficial contour along the posterolateral humerus. Proximally, the muscle bellies converge toward a broad triceps tendon that courses distally to the olecranon of the ulna, lying posterior to the elbow joint. Anterior to this mass, the biceps brachii remains visible along the anterolateral arm, separated from triceps by the lateral intermuscular septum and the humeral shaft. Radius and ulna extend distal to the elbow, with the hand skeleton carried laterally in line with the forearm. A lateral triceps view matters because it clarifies how elbow extension is generated while preserving the relationship of extensor bulk to the lateral epicondylar region, the radial head, and the posterolateral elbow capsule. Clinically, this is the corridor used in many posterior and posterolateral approaches to the distal humerus and elbow, where splitting or reflecting triceps can endanger the radial nerve as it winds from posterior to anterior across the lateral humerus. The triceps tendon insertion and olecranon contour also ground discussions of triceps tendinopathy, olecranon bursitis, and the physical exam finding of a palpable defect after distal triceps rupture.
