Description
Palmar soft tissues are rendered over the carpus, metacarpals, and phalanges, with articular cartilage capping the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joint surfaces in blue. At the radial side, the thenar eminence sits superficial to the first metacarpal, consistent with abductor pollicis brevis and flexor pollicis brevis positioning, while the ulnar border suggests the hypothenar mass overlying the fifth metacarpal and pisiform-hamate region. Centrally, the palmar compartment aligns with the expected course of the flexor tendons as they pass distal to the carpal bones and fan toward the digits, with intrinsic muscle bulk deep to the palmar skin and fascia. Landmarks read clearly. Palmar anatomy matters because the skin and fascia tether directly to the underlying compartments, and small changes in these relationships explain common pathology. The thickened palmar aponeurosis and the longitudinal pretendinous bands are the substrate for Dupuytren disease, where cords draw the metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints into flexion.
