Description
Running distally from the anterior wrist (carpus) into the palm (manus), the radial and ulnar arteries contribute to the superficial palmar arch and deep palmar arch, from which common palmar digital arteries course inferiorly into proper palmar digital arteries along the sides of each finger. Venous return parallels the arterial pattern with superficial and deep veins draining proximally toward the wrist, while the palmar aponeurosis and flexor tendons lie superficial and deep in layered relationships that frame the vasculature. Median and ulnar nerves track with their usual companions, the median nerve entering centrally at the carpal tunnel and the ulnar nerve passing more medially through Guyon canal before branching into the palm. Small anastomotic loops around the metacarpal heads and within the digital pulp stand out. Dense territory. Palmar vascular anatomy matters when bleeding control or perfusion is on the line, and this anterior perspective makes the collateral pathways easy to teach: a laceration across the distal palm may spare a digit if the superficial and deep arches communicate well, but a more proximal injury near the ulnar artery can compromise multiple common digital trunks. Clinicians also rely on these relationships when harvesting a radial artery for bypass or placing a radial arterial line, where an incomplete palmar arch can leave the thumb or index finger ischemic despite a seemingly normal Allen test. For hand surgery, the proximity of the ulnar neurovascular bundle to the hook of hamate in Guyon canal is a practical warning label.
