Description
Beneath the palmar skin, the thenar eminence sits radially over the first metacarpal and trapezium, while the hypothenar muscle mass lies ulnarly along the fifth metacarpal, framing the central compartment of the palm. Flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus tendons course distally in parallel bands toward the middle and distal phalanges, with lumbricals arising from the profundus tendons and passing on the radial sides of the digits. Metacarpals and phalanges form the osseous scaffold deep to the soft tissues, linked by palmar plates and collateral ligaments at the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints.
