Description
Presented in an inferior (basal) perspective, the cerebral hemispheres are seen from the orbital surfaces of the frontal lobes posteriorly toward the temporal lobes and occipital poles, with gyri and sulci framing the midline basal cistern region. Anteriorly, the olfactory bulbs and olfactory tracts course posteriorly along the gyrus rectus toward the anterior perforated substance. Near the center, the optic nerves converge at the optic chiasm, then continue as optic tracts sweeping posterolaterally around the cerebral peduncles of the midbrain. Blue venous channels and yellow cranial nerve pathways are layered over these landmarks, including nerves emerging from the interpeduncular fossa and along the pontomedullary junction. For teaching neuroanatomy, this basal view clarifies relationships that are hard to appreciate in lateral or superior projections, particularly the proximity of the optic apparatus to the infundibulum (pituitary stalk) and hypothalamic region. It also maps the corridor used in transsphenoidal and extended endonasal approaches, where the chiasm position (pre-fixed or post-fixed) and the course of the optic tracts influence operative exposure and risk to vision. Short and direct. The arrangement of cranial nerves around the cerebral peduncles and pons also supports clinical localization in cases of compressive lesions or aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in the circle of Willis region. Neuroscience and medical anatomy courses use this image to orient learners to the ventral surface before moving into sectional anatomy and neuroimaging correlation.
