Description
Dominating the posterior calf, the soleus is presented as the broad, flat muscle lying deep to the medial and lateral heads of gastrocnemius, its superior border sweeping obliquely from the proximal fibula toward the soleal line of the tibia. Inferiorly, its fibers converge into the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon, which descends centrally to the posterior calcaneus. Proximal landmarks include the distal femur, tibial plateau, and fibular head framing the knee region, while the tibia remains medial and the fibula lateral along the leg. Layering is the point. Soleus anatomy matters because it is the primary plantarflexor in knee flexion and the main driver of endurance plantarflexion during walking, running, and uphill gait, when gastrocnemius contribution drops with knee bend. Its deep posterior compartment location also explains pain patterns and exam pitfalls: a calf strain that reproduces with plantarflexion during a bent-knee heel raise localizes you toward soleus rather than gastrocnemius.
