Description
Arising from the cervical column in posterior aspect, the C3 vertebra is centered between C2 superiorly and C4 inferiorly, with the paired laminae converging in the midline to form the spinous process. Lateral to the laminae, the superior and inferior articular processes frame the zygapophysial (facet) joints, while the transverse processes project laterally and contain the transverse foramina for the vertebral vessels. The vertebral arch bounds the vertebral foramen posteriorly, and the short, often bifid C3 spinous process sits posterior to the spinal canal in the median plane. Two adjacent vertebrae are highlighted in blue for emphasis, helping the viewer track segmental level and alignment across the cervical curvature. Posterior cervical anatomy at C3 matters when you are correlating pain generators and surgical landmarks in the upper neck. The C2 to C3 and C3 to C4 facet joints are frequent sources of axial neck pain after whiplash injury, and their orientation explains why medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation target predictable points along the articular pillars.
