Description
Positioned within a stacked cervical spine model, the C5 vertebra is presented from a posterior perspective, with the laminae sloping inferomedially toward the spinous process and its terminal tubercle. Laterally, the paired transverse processes project outward, framing the posterior aspect of the vertebral arch and the region of the intervertebral foramina between adjacent levels. Superior and inferior articular processes sit at the junctions of pedicle and lamina, their facet surfaces oriented to permit cervical flexion, extension, and rotation while maintaining stability. Two midcervical levels are color-highlighted in blue to direct attention to this segment. Posterior bony landmarks at C5 matter because they define safe and reproducible reference points for posterior cervical approaches and for localizing levels during examination or intervention. Palpation often targets the more prominent C7 spinous process, but C5 is frequently implicated in radiculopathy patterns, and its level must be distinguished when correlating dermatomal symptoms with foraminal stenosis, uncovertebral osteophytes, or posterolateral disc herniation. Spinous process morphology and the relationship of lamina to facet joints also frame the corridor for decompressive procedures such as laminotomy or laminectomy. Small margins here.
