Description
Centered on the fifth cervical vertebra (C5), the illustration resolves the vertebral body anteriorly and the vertebral arch posteriorly, enclosing a large, triangular vertebral foramen typical of the mid cervical spine. From the pedicles and laminae, the spinous process projects posteriorly, while the transverse processes extend laterally and carry the transverse foramina. Superior articular processes sit posterolaterally, their facet surfaces angled slightly obliquely relative to the horizontal plane, and the uncinate processes rise along the superolateral margins of the C5 body adjacent to the intervertebral disc space. A mid cervical segment is implied. Facet orientation at C5 matters because it helps explain the coupled rotation and lateral flexion of the neck, and it defines the geometry of the zygapophysial (facet) joints that often generate axial neck pain. The slightly oblique superior articular facets also frame common procedural corridors: medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation target the C4 to C6 medial branches along the articular pillars, and posterior cervical foraminotomy relies on accurate understanding of lamina, facet, and pedicle relationships to avoid iatrogenic instability. Nearby, uncovertebral joints (of Luschka) at C5 to C6 are frequent sites of osteophyte formation that can narrow the intervertebral foramen and contribute to C6 radiculopathy.
