Description
Positioned in lateral profile, the C4 cervical vertebra is presented with the vertebral body anteriorly and the vertebral arch and spinous process posteriorly, emphasizing the sagittal depth of the centrum. Superior and inferior articular processes project at the junction of pedicle and lamina, their facet surfaces oriented to support cervical flexion and extension while limiting excessive rotation. The transverse process extends laterally, with the transverse foramen expected just inferior to the superior articular facet and anterior to the posterior tubercle, a defining cervical landmark. C4 sits at the functional midpoint of the cervical lordosis and is a common reference level when correlating surface anatomy to imaging, airway management, and anterior neck surgery. The relationship between the uncinate processes of the vertebral body and the adjacent intervertebral disc helps explain cervical spondylosis patterns, where uncovertebral osteophytes can narrow the intervertebral foramen and contribute to radicular symptoms.
