Description
Positioned at the cervicothoracic junction, the seventh cervical vertebra (C7) is rendered in lateral profile with emphasis on its long, inferiorly sloping spinous process, the classic vertebra prominens. Anteriorly, the vertebral body faces the adjacent intervertebral discs, while posterior elements, the laminae and spinous process, project dorsally and caudally in relation to the body. The transverse process extends laterally toward the expected course of the vertebral artery, yet at C7 the foramen transversarium is commonly small or may transmit only veins. C7 sits immediately superior to T1, where costovertebral anatomy begins, and the change in facet orientation marks the transition from cervical mobility to thoracic stability. Clinically, this lateral view is a workhorse for localization and biomechanics. C7 is the palpated landmark used to count vertebral levels in physical exam, but misidentification is common because T1 can be equally prominent, so seeing the relative length and downward slope of the C7 spinous process helps clarify the level. Traction injuries and degenerative change often concentrate at C6 to C7, and lateral radiographs and CT reconstructions scrutinize the C7 vertebral body, pedicles, and spinous process for teardrop fractures, facet injuries, or alignment disruption at the cervicothoracic junction. A common fixation endpoint. Ideal for gross anatomy and osteology teaching when introducing cervical vertebrae variants, and for radiology and orthopaedic or neurosurgical education discussing lateral cervical spine landmarks, level counting, and injury patterns at C6 to T1.
