Description
Positioned at the caudal end of the cervical spine, the seventh cervical vertebra (C7) is shown from an anterior perspective with its broad vertebral body centered on the midline and the intervertebral discs stacked superiorly and inferiorly. Lateral to the body, the pedicles lead into the transverse processes, whose anterior tubercles and transverse foramina mark the cervical pattern even as C7 transitions toward thoracic morphology. Superior and inferior vertebral notches contribute to the intervertebral foramina at C6 to C7 and C7 to T1, the exit corridors for the C7 and C8 spinal nerves. Posterior elements are largely recessed from this viewpoint, but their mass is implied behind the vertebral body. C7 matters because it is the vertebra most often used clinically as a palpable landmark at the cervicothoracic junction, and its larger body helps explain why it behaves differently under axial load than the midcervical segments. Degenerative change at C6 to C7 is a common source of cervical radiculopathy, with C7 nerve root involvement producing pain and paresthesia radiating toward the middle finger and weakness in triceps and wrist extensors.
