Description
Seen from the posterior (dorsal) aspect of an adult male hand, the phalanges are presented in continuity with the metacarpals and the carpal row, with the distal radius and ulna partially included at the proximal margin. Middle phalanges occupy the segment between the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints of digits II to V, distal to the proximal phalanges and proximal to the distal phalanges, while the thumb appropriately lacks a middle phalanx. Across each finger, the middle phalanx lies centrally in the digit, with its base articulating proximally and its head forming the condylar surface distally, aligned in the longitudinal axis of the ray. Dorsal hand anatomy is where bony contour and joint alignment are easiest to read, so this posterior view supports teaching and assessment of PIP and DIP congruity, finger rotation, and malalignment after trauma.
