Description
Viewed from the dorsum of an adult male hand, the proximal phalanges of digits II to V are presented in posterior orientation, aligned distal to their respective metacarpal heads at the metacarpophalangeal joints. Each proximal phalanx shows a broad dorsal shaft tapering distally to the head that articulates with the base of the middle phalanx at the proximal interphalangeal joint. Proximal to the fingers, the metacarpals and the clustered carpal bones remain visible as skeletal context, establishing the longitudinal axes of the rays and the relative ulnar to radial splay across the hand. Dorsal osseous anatomy matters when you are correlating surface landmarks with tendon mechanics and injury patterns. From this posterior perspective, the relationship between the proximal phalanx and the metacarpal head frames the extensor mechanism that crosses the MCP joint, a region where sagittal band rupture can cause extensor tendon subluxation and painful snapping during finger flexion. The proximal phalanx is also a frequent site of fractures from axial load or rotational trauma, and appreciating its dorsal contour helps when planning reduction, pin placement, and assessing potential stiffness at the PIP joint.
