Description
Oriented in an anterior (palmar) perspective, the hand skeleton is shown with the proximal phalanges of digits II to V highlighted, each lying distal to its corresponding metacarpal head and proximal to the middle phalanx. Their broad bases form the osseous side of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints, while the shafts narrow toward the neck before expanding into the heads that articulate at the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints. Carpal bones are visible proximally at the wrist, with the metacarpals spanning distally through the palm as unhighlighted reference. Clear spatial relationships. Palmar orientation matters because it matches how clinicians examine tenderness and rotational alignment after trauma, and it maps cleanly onto common injury patterns of the proximal phalanx. Transverse and spiral fractures often occur through the shaft or neck, and even a small degree of malrotation becomes obvious clinically as finger overlap during flexion at the MCP and PIP joints. This view also supports teaching of collateral ligament and volar plate mechanics at the MCP and PIP, where proximal phalanx base and head geometry constrains motion and influences stability.
