Description
Presented as a lateral view of a mid-sagittal brain in an adult male, the section brings the medial cerebrum into profile with the cingulate gyrus arching superior to the corpus callosum (genu, body, and splenium) and the septum pellucidum and ventricular cavity deep to it. Inferior and posterior, the diencephalic region lies anterior to the midbrain, while the cerebellar vermis sits posterior to the pons and medulla, separated by the fourth ventricle. Cranial nerve roots emerge from the brainstem, projecting anteriorly and laterally toward the skull base and neck, with color-coded arteries, veins, and nerves helping distinguish neurovascular relationships. Midline sagittal anatomy is where students first understand how the forebrain, brainstem, and cerebellum align along a single axis, and it is also where many clinical localizations start. Lesions affecting the corpus callosum (classically in demyelinating disease or infarction in the pericallosal territory) produce interhemispheric disconnection syndromes that only make sense when you appreciate callosal topography from genu to splenium.
