Description

Running centrally through the thorax, the heart sits in the mediastinum with the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk emerging superiorly, and the superior and inferior venae cavae entering on the right side. From the aortic arch, the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery travel superiorly and laterally toward the head, neck, and upper limb, with the internal jugular veins and subclavian veins converging to form the brachiocephalic veins. Inferior to the diaphragm, the abdominal aorta continues in the midline, giving paired iliac arteries that pass into the pelvis and lower limbs, while deep veins accompany arteries proximally to return blood to the right atrium via the inferior vena cava. Color coding separates arteries and veins at a glance. Clear and fast. This whole-body cardiovascular map matters when you need to track how pathology propagates along named conduits, for example an aortic dissection extending from the ascending aorta into the arch branches, or iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis with embolic risk to the pulmonary arteries.
