Description
Running centrally within the abdominal cavity, the colon is shown from an anterior perspective with the ascending colon positioned on the patient’s right, the transverse colon spanning superiorly across the abdomen, and the descending colon on the left, continuing into the sigmoid colon inferiorly. Green lymphatic vessels trace the drainage of the large intestine along the mesocolon, converging toward epicolic and paracolic channels that course medially to intermediate and principal nodes clustered along the named colic vessels. Red arterial branches and paired blue venous tributaries travel in parallel within the mesentery and mesocolon, while yellow autonomic nerves form periarterial plexuses that accompany the superior and inferior mesenteric distributions. Abdominal wall musculature frames the field anteriorly. For colorectal oncology and inflammatory bowel disease staging, lymphatic anatomy is not decorative, it determines where disease spreads and how you plan a resection. This anterior mapping aligns with the way surgeons think about central vascular ligation and lymphadenectomy, following lymphatic flow toward nodes at the roots of the ileocolic, right colic, middle colic, left colic, and sigmoid vessels, where metastatic deposits often declare themselves before distant spread. It also clarifies why right versus left hemicolectomy, and segmental colectomy, demand different nodal basins and different risk profiles for injury to peri-mesenteric autonomic fibers.
