Description
Oriented from an anterior perspective in a male torso, the spleen is highlighted in the left hypochondriac region, tucked deep to the left costal margin and lying superior to the left colic flexure. Its diaphragmatic surface faces anterolaterally toward ribs 9 to 11, while the medial (visceral) surface turns posteromedially toward the stomach and left kidney. Along that visceral surface, the gastric impression sits more anterosuperiorly and the renal impression lies more posteroinferiorly, with the splenic hilum positioned between these contact areas for passage of the splenic vessels. Color separation emphasizes the organ against the overlying pectoral contours and anterior chest wall landmarks. Anterior localization matters because the spleen is palpably relevant only when enlarged, and this view helps correlate surface anatomy with clinical splenomegaly, blunt left upper quadrant trauma, and referred pain patterns. The superior pole abuts the diaphragm, so irritation can refer to the left shoulder via the phrenic nerve (Kehr sign). Appreciating the spleen’s relationship to the stomach and left kidney also supports understanding iatrogenic risk during left nephrectomy, fundal gastric procedures, or mobilization of the splenic flexure where the splenocolic ligament and short gastric vessels can tether the organ.
