Description
Oriented from the plantar (inferior) aspect, the distal phalanx of a male toe is presented with its base proximal and its ungual tuberosity at the distal end, forming a crescentic plantar tuft near the tip. The distal phalanx sits distal to the middle phalanx (or directly distal to the proximal phalanx in the hallux), and it articulates proximally at the interphalangeal joint while tapering distally toward the nail bed region. Surrounding pedal skeletal context includes adjacent phalanges and the metatarsals proximally, with the tarsal complex (calcaneus and talus) lying posteriorly in the same field. Bone surfaces and joint margins are cleanly delineated. A plantar view of the distal phalanx matters because the ungual tuberosity is the bony endpoint that accepts load and traction from the flexor digitorum longus (and flexor hallucis longus at the hallux), and it explains why distal toe pain often localizes to the pulp rather than the nail plate. This is a frequent site of crush injury and comminuted tuft fracture, and the contour of the plantar tuft helps learners understand why radiographs can show small avulsion fragments at the flexor insertion or why osteomyelitis can track from a plantar ulcer in diabetic foot disease.
