Seen from a superior (dorsal) perspective, the lesser toes are organized as proximal, middle, and distal phalanges aligned distal to the metatarsal heads, with the middle phalanges forming the intermediate segments between the proximal and distal phalanges of toes II through V. The hallux is identifiable by the absence of a middle phalanx, showing only proximal and distal phalanges. Across each digit, the middle phalanx presents a narrow dorsal surface and expands at its ends into a proximal base and distal head, which articulate at the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints, respectively. More proximally, the metatarsals and portions of the tarsal skeleton provide orientation to the forefoot and midfoot.
