Description
Sagittal female pelvic anatomy is centered on the uterus, cervix, and vagina, with the uterine corpus positioned superior to the vaginal canal and inclined relative to the axis of the vagina. The cervix projects inferiorly into the superior vaginal vault, and the external os opens at the distal end of the cervical canal where it communicates with the vaginal lumen. Anterior to the vagina sits the urinary bladder and urethra, while the rectum occupies a posterior relationship, defining the rectovaginal and vesicovaginal intervals clinicians reference during pelvic examination and surgery. Clear boundaries. That cervicovaginal junction is the landmark for a large part of everyday gynecology: speculum placement aims to bring the cervix into view, and Pap testing targets the transformation zone near the external os where cervical intraepithelial neoplasia most often arises. During labor, effacement and dilation occur at the cervix while the vaginal canal forms the terminal segment of the birth canal, so understanding the uterine and vaginal axes helps explain fetal descent, station, and why cervical lacerations can occur after rapid delivery or operative vaginal birth. Use this artwork for obstetrics and gynecology teaching on pelvic exams, cervical screening, and the mechanics of parturition, or for patient-facing education explaining the difference between uterus, cervix, and vagina and where common procedures (speculum exam, IUD insertion, cervical biopsy) actually occur. It also supports medical publishing on pelvic floor surgery and imaging correlation where a mid-sagittal mental model guides ultrasound and MRI interpretation.
