Description
Dominating the field is a unilocular human adipocyte, with a single large lipid droplet occupying most of the intracellular volume and displacing the cytoplasm into a thin peripheral rim. Along that rim, the plasma membrane defines the cell boundary while the nucleus sits eccentrically and appears flattened, pushed toward the cell periphery by the lipid vacuole. Scattered organelles in the cortical cytoplasm, including mitochondria and elements of endoplasmic reticulum, remain visible as small basophilic structures around the droplet. Minimal extracellular space separates adjacent cells, consistent with tightly packed white adipose tissue architecture. This morphology is the teaching hallmark of white fat, and it helps you distinguish energy-storing adipocytes from multilocular brown adipocytes in histology and metabolic physiology. The peripheral nucleus and single lipid vacuole also explain common histologic artifacts: routine paraffin processing extracts triglyceride, leaving a clear “signet ring” appearance that can be confused with mucin-filled signet-ring carcinoma unless the context and location are considered.
