Description
Giardia duodenalis is rendered as a semi-transparent trophozoite with the classic bilaterally symmetric, ovoid body plan. Two anteriorly placed nuclei sit side by side, giving the characteristic “face-like” appearance, while multiple flagella project from the ventral and posterior margins and trail distally for motility. Within the cytoplasm, the paired axonemes course longitudinally toward the caudal end, and the supporting median bodies lie centrally, aligned with the organism’s long axis. Orientation reads as a ventral-anterior emphasis. Clear landmarks. This morphology matters because the trophozoite is the adherent, pathogenic stage in the proximal small intestine, attaching to duodenal and jejunal mucosa via its ventral adhesive disc rather than by tissue invasion. Recognizing the two nuclei and organized flagellar apparatus helps distinguish Giardia from other intestinal protists on wet mount and supports correlation with the malabsorptive, foul-smelling diarrhea and weight loss seen in giardiasis, including post-travel disease and outbreaks linked to untreated surface water. The internal microtubular architecture also underpins its characteristic “falling leaf” motility during microscopy.
