Description

Giardia duodenalis appears as a bilaterally symmetric, pear shaped trophozoite with a broad anterior end tapering posteriorly, rendered in white with selective internal contrast. Paired nuclei sit anteriorly and medially, flanking the midline like two ovoid “eye” profiles, while the axostyle runs longitudinally toward the posterior as an internal cytoskeletal bundle. Ventral median bodies lie just posterior to the nuclei, and multiple flagella emerge in paired sets from the ventral and posterior aspects, extending distally beyond the body margin. Emphasis on the axostyle and median bodies supports teaching the ventral disc associated microtubule architecture that underpins attachment to duodenal and jejunal mucosa. That detail matters when correlating morphology with clinical giardiasis, where trophozoites adhere to the brush border and can contribute to malabsorption and steatorrhea, and where stool ova and parasite exams often miss trophozoites unless samples are fresh or concentrated. Recognition of the two nuclei and median bodies also helps differentiate Giardia trophozoites from other flagellates in wet mount preparations. Parasitology and microbiology educators can pair this plate with life cycle diagrams to contrast trophozoite versus cyst identification and to reinforce diagnostic morphology used in stool microscopy, antigen testing, and direct fluorescent antibody assays. Medical publishers will find it well suited for chapters on waterborne protozoa, travel related diarrhea, and outbreaks linked to contaminated surface water or childcare settings.
