Description

Giardia duodenalis is rendered as a trophozoite seen from its ventral surface, with a bilaterally symmetric, pear shaped body tapering posteriorly and a broad anterior end. Paired nuclei sit anterior and medial, creating the characteristic “face” appearance, while the ventral adhesive (sucking) disc occupies the central ventral aspect and spans much of the organism’s width. Multiple flagella emerge in paired sets and trail posteriorly, their basal bodies and axonemes implied beneath the semi transparent cytoplasm. Scale is microscopic. Ventral surface anatomy matters because this is the attachment machinery that allows trophozoites to resist peristalsis and colonize the proximal small intestine, most often the duodenum and jejunum. Disc mediated adherence and flagellar motility correlate with malabsorptive, foul smelling diarrhea and steatorrhea in giardiasis, and they explain why heavy colonization can flatten brush border microvilli without true tissue invasion. For teaching, the paired nuclei and ventral disc are the discriminators from other luminal protozoa on stool microscopy and from lookalikes in wet mounts. Parasitology and microbiology courses use this sort of 3D trophozoite view to anchor the classic morphology before students see variable shapes in ova and parasite preparations, direct fluorescent antibody testing, or antigen assays.
