Description
Laterally from the left, the cervical trachea lies inferior to the larynx and anterior to the cervical esophagus, with its C-shaped tracheal cartilages opening posteriorly toward the membranous wall. Superiorly, the airway continues from the subglottic larynx at the level of the cricoid cartilage, then descends in the midline toward the thoracic inlet. Each ring frames the anterior and lateral wall, while the posterior trachealis muscle spans the open ends and forms the compliant boundary against the esophageal bulge during swallowing. Clean anatomy. No distractions. Left-sided profiling of the trachea matters because it clarifies the relationship between the rigid cartilaginous framework and the posterior membranous wall, the segment surgeons enter during tracheostomy and the surface anesthesiologists and intensivists stress during endotracheal intubation.
