Description
Posteriorly oriented anatomy of the male liver is centered on the tuber omentale (omental tuberosity), a rounded prominence on the visceral surface adjacent to the gastric impression. The omental tuberosity sits inferior to the bare area and posterior to the anterior margin, with the left lobe positioned more medially and the right lobe extending laterally toward the renal impression. Nearby surface landmarks that logically accompany this region include the fissure for the ligamentum venosum, the porta hepatis, and the groove for the inferior vena cava. Small, quiet topography. It matters. Because the omental tuberosity lies at the interface between the liver and stomach, this posterior view helps clarify peritoneal relationships that drive surgical planes, adhesions, and the spread of fluid in the supracolic compartment. Surgeons working in the lesser sac, during distal gastrectomy, or while mobilizing the left lobe for exposure of the hiatus rely on these visceral surface cues to avoid capsular tears and to maintain orientation around the porta hepatis and IVC groove.
