Description
Inferior to the diaphragmatic surface, the visceral surface of the male liver is oriented toward the stomach and transverse colon, with the caudate lobe positioned posteriorly and medially near the groove for the inferior vena cava. Along this same posterior visceral landscape, the omental tuberosity (tuber omentale) appears as a small rounded prominence adjacent to the caudate region, in close topographic relationship to the lesser omentum at the porta hepatis. The fissure for the ligamentum venosum lies just to its left, separating the caudate lobe from the left lobe. Small surface contours like this read differently depending on rotation, so clear inferior orientation matters. Recognition of the omental tuberosity region is most relevant during open or laparoscopic inspection of the porta hepatis and caudate lobe, where minor prominences can be mistaken for pathologic nodularity or confused with adjacent peritoneal reflections. In cirrhosis or diffuse metastatic disease, early surface irregularity often prompts palpation or intraoperative ultrasound, and an accurate mental map of normal variants on the inferior hepatic surface helps prevent overcalling a benign tubercle. This view also supports teaching of peritoneal attachments, because the lesser omentum, hepatogastric ligament, and the visceral surface landmarks converge in a compact space. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and surgical anatomy modules focused on the visceral surface of the liver, the caudate lobe, and the porta hepatis, or in atlas plates clarifying normal surface landmarks that can mimic disease on inspection.
