Description
Arising from the trachea at the carina, the right and left main (primary) bronchi descend into the hila and arborize into lobar and segmental bronchi in a posterior orientation. From a right-sided posterior perspective, the right main bronchus runs more vertical and wider than the left, with bronchial branches projecting laterally into the right lung while the left bronchus courses more obliquely toward the left hilum. Posteriorly, the bronchial tree sits anterior to the vertebral column and posterior to the pulmonary arteries, with the branching pattern layering from central hilar structures to more distal tubes within the lung parenchyma. This angle matters when you need to teach or plan around airway anatomy rather than alveolar detail. The right main bronchus is the usual path for aspirated material, so a posterior view that emphasizes its straighter trajectory helps explain why foreign bodies and post-obstructive pneumonias more often involve the right lower lobe bronchus. Bronchoscopic navigation and lung resection planning also rely on segmental bronchus identification, where small errors can cost a segment.
