Description
Obliquely from a lateral aspect, the male rectal ampulla is rendered with the transverse rectal folds (Houston’s valves) projecting into the lumen as semilunar shelves. The upper rectum continues superiorly from the sigmoid colon, while the ampulla widens inferiorly before tapering at the anorectal junction into the anal canal. Anterior to the rectum, the expected relationship is to the prostate and seminal vesicles, with the sacrum and coccyx lying posteriorly. Small, discrete folds. Houston’s valves matter because they create fixed mucosal contours that can be mistaken for pathology on endoscopy or contrast studies, and they also influence how instruments pass through the rectum. During flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, the endoscope tip often catches at these transverse folds, so knowing their typical spacing and orientation helps reduce mucosal trauma and improves intubation of the upper rectum and sigmoid. Their position also frames the rectal ampulla as a distensible reservoir immediately superior to the anal canal, a key teaching point when explaining continence mechanics and the sensation of rectal filling.
