Description
Posteriorly oriented anatomy of the male rectum is presented with emphasis on the transverse rectal folds (Houston valves) projecting into the lumen as semilunar ridges. Typically three in number, these folds alternate from left to right along the mid to distal rectum, creating a staggered internal contour that lies superior to the anorectal junction. Inferiorly, the rectal ampulla widens before continuing toward the anal canal, while the folds sit proximal to this distal expansion. Recognition of the transverse rectal folds matters during endoscopy and transanal procedures because they can mimic pathology or limit instrument passage when the scope tip repeatedly catches at a fold. Their alternating attachment points also help explain why the rectum does not behave like a straight tube during insufflation or rectal catheter placement. Misidentifying a prominent fold as a mass, or forcing past it, can contribute to mucosal trauma and bleeding. A common teaching point.
