Running longitudinally along the external surface of the male colon, the three teniae coli are rendered as discrete muscular bands that converge distally toward the rectosigmoid region and spread proximally across the ascending, transverse, and descending colon. Taenia libera occupies the anterior aspect of the transverse colon, while taenia omentalis tracks the attachment line of the greater omentum and taenia mesocolica corresponds to the transverse mesocolon, relationships that shift in predictable fashion as the colon turns at the hepatic and splenic flexures. Haustra form between semilunar folds, with the sacculations bounded by the tonic pull of these longitudinal bands. Orientation cues emphasize anterior versus posterior surfaces so the band positions can be read clinically.
