Description
Running longitudinally along the external surface of the male colon, the three teniae coli are rendered as distinct muscle bands separated by haustral sacculations. Taenia libera tracks along the free anterior aspect, while the taenia omentalis lies where the greater omentum attaches to the transverse colon, and the taenia mesocolica aligns with the mesenteric attachment on the posterior aspect. Their relationship to the tenia-driven plicae semilunares and the intervening haustra is explicit. Orientation is anatomical. Teniae coli matter because they organize colonic topography and guide intraoperative identification of colon versus small bowel, even when the lumen is decompressed or distorted. Following a tenia to its convergence helps locate the vermiform appendix on the caecum, a practical maneuver during appendectomy and diagnostic laparoscopy. Loss of normal haustration and altered contour of these longitudinal bands also underpins classic teaching around colonic obstruction and inflammatory disease, where a featureless colon can signal toxic megacolon or chronic ulcerative colitis.
