Description
Prominent on the external surface of the male large intestine, the three longitudinal smooth muscle bands, teniae coli (taenia libera, taenia omentalis, and taenia mesocolica), run parallel from the caecum toward the rectosigmoid region. One band occupies a relatively free anterior position, while the omental taenia aligns with the attachment of the greater omentum along the transverse colon, and the mesocolic taenia marks the posterior attachment of the transverse mesocolon and sigmoid mesocolon. Between these bands, the haustra coli bulge outward, and semilunar folds correspond internally. Landmarks matter. Recognition of the teniae coli is practical anatomy for both imaging correlation and operative orientation. Following a taenia to the convergence at the base of the appendix is a standard method for locating the vermiform appendix during appendectomy, especially when the caecum is mobile or the appendix lies retrocaecal. In diverticular disease and colonic volvulus, the arrangement of haustra and the tension lines created by these longitudinal bands help explain segmental patterns of wall thickening, luminal narrowing, and the propensity of the sigmoid colon to twist on its mesentery.
