Description
Running as a distinct longitudinal ribbon along the external surface of the adult male colon, the taenia coli designated taenia mesocolica (mesocolic tenia) marks the line of attachment of the mesocolon to the large intestine. Relative to the taenia libera and taenia omentalis, this band occupies the mesenteric aspect of the colon, sitting opposite the antimesenteric haustra and aligning with the peritoneal reflection where the mesocolon fans out from the colonic wall. A subtle groove often parallels it, reflecting the tethering effect of the mesentery and the way the taenia concentrate the longitudinal muscle layer. Orientation to the taenia mesocolica matters when teaching how the colon is suspended and vascularized, because the mesocolon carries the colic branches of the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries, accompanying veins, lymphatics, and autonomic nerves.
