Description
Running along the external surface of the male colon, the taenia mesocolica (mesocolic tenia) appears as one of three longitudinal muscle bands of the large intestine, positioned on the aspect where the mesocolon attaches. In anatomical position, it tracks longitudinally along the colon wall and sits opposite the taenia omentalis and taenia libera, with haustra and semilunar folds forming between these bands. Medially it relates to the mesenteric border, while the antimesenteric surface lies opposite. This band remains continuous across the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon, condensing toward the rectosigmoid junction where the taeniae spread into a continuous longitudinal layer. Orientation to the taenia mesocolica matters in colectomy and laparoscopic mobilization because it marks the mesenteric side, where you encounter the vascular pedicle, lymphatics, and the surgical plane between mesocolon and retroperitoneum. It is a practical landmark when teaching why diverticulosis tends to form at points of vasa recta penetration through the circular muscle, typically between taeniae rather than within the bands themselves. Misidentifying the mesenteric border can lead you into the wrong dissection plane. A small error, big bleeding.
