Description

Centered in the pelvic urinary tract, the female urinary bladder is opened to reveal its innermost lining, the urothelium (transitional epithelium) with its underlying lamina propria. Mucosal folds (rugae) course irregularly across the bladder body and dome, while the trigone region appears smoother and sits posteroinferiorly between the ureteric orifices and the internal urethral orifice. The bladder neck narrows inferiorly toward the urethra, a fixed landmark compared with the more distensible superior wall. Surface texture dominates. A superficial bladder mucosa view is the working perspective for cystoscopy, where erythema, edema, trabeculation, papillary fronds, or ulceration may signal pathology. Urothelial carcinoma commonly arises from this lining and often presents as painless gross hematuria, so orientation to the trigone and bladder neck matters when mapping lesions, planning transurethral resection, and documenting proximity to the ureteric orifices. Interstitial cystitis and radiation cystitis also declare themselves at the mucosal surface, with characteristic inflammatory changes that are taught and graded visually. Use this illustration for urology and gynecology teaching on female lower urinary tract anatomy, emphasizing the relationship of rugae versus the smooth trigone and how mucosa behaves during filling and emptying. It also fits atlases and review articles on cystoscopic anatomy, hematuria workup, urothelial tumor staging, and catheter-related or postoperative mucosal injury documentation.
