Description
Sagittal section through the adult female urinary bladder emphasizes the mucosa lining the vesical cavity, with mucosal folds (rugae) seen superiorly where the bladder is relaxed and a smoother contour expected over the trigone. Inferiorly, the bladder neck narrows into the internal urethral orifice and proximal urethra, positioned anterior to the vagina and inferior to the uterine cervix in typical pelvic anatomy. Posterior and superior relationships to the peritoneal reflection over the uterovesical pouch can be inferred, while the muscular wall (detrusor) and submucosa frame the mucosal layer from deep to superficial. Orientation is clear. Focusing on the bladder mucosa matters because most clinically relevant epithelial pathology begins here: urothelial carcinoma arises from the transitional epithelium, and cystoscopic mapping relies on recognizing normal rugae versus mucosal erythema, edema, or papillary change.
