Description
Arcing beneath the right hemidiaphragm, the superior aspect of the male liver is presented as the smooth diaphragmatic surface (facies diaphragmatica hepatis), with the convex dome rising superiorly and the thinner anterior margin tapering inferiorly toward the costal margin. A sagittal prominence consistent with the falciform ligament divides the surface into a larger right lobe laterally and a smaller left lobe medially and to the left. Posteriorly, the contour implies the bare area where hepatic peritoneum reflects to the diaphragm, an anatomic region that lies adjacent to the inferior vena cava groove and the central tendon of the diaphragm.
