Description
Superficial and deep muscles of facial expression and mastication are rendered over a subtly indicated skull, with the mandible, zygomatic arch, and orbital margins providing attachment context for the masseter, temporalis, orbicularis oris, orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major, and buccinator. Yellow nerve pathways track across the face and neck in the expected courses of the facial nerve (CN VII) after it exits the stylomastoid foramen and divides within the parotid region into temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical branches that run largely anteriorly and inferiorly toward their target muscles. Inferiorly, the sternocleidomastoid spans from mastoid process to sternum and clavicle, forming an anterolateral neck landmark with adjacent cervical nerve branches and accompanying blue venous channels. Surgical and procedural planning often turns on these relationships. The fan-like branching of CN VII across the masseter and toward the oral commissure is the map surgeons keep in mind during parotidectomy, facelift approaches, and repair of mandibular angle lacerations, where the marginal mandibular branch is susceptible as it courses near the inferior border of the mandible. Fine detail around the orbicularis oculi and zygomaticus also supports teaching safe chemodenervation patterns and helps explain why Bell palsy produces brow ptosis, incomplete eye closure, and oral incompetence on the affected side. Landmarks matter. Educators can drop this plate directly into head and neck anatomy, dental anatomy, or cranial nerve modules to tie motor innervation to named facial muscles rather than abstract “facial expression.” Clinical teams may also use it for patient-facing counseling in ENT, maxillofacial surgery, and plastics when discussing facial nerve risk zones and postoperative weakness patterns.
